Some parents are opting today to homeschool their children. These are decisions that can be made for a variety of reasons: dissatisfaction with public and parochial school curricula, religious reasons, political reasons, reasons related to a child’s anxiety, ability to relate to others, or other mental health reasons.
Piero’s Music recognizes that children who are homeschooled can really benefit from having music lessons and offers these lessons as a virtual option to be as respectful as possible. This is not because New Jersey requires students to have credits in the arts or extracurricular activities, but it does enrich and make learning a lot more fun.
For virtual students, we are equipped to support most streaming services, such as Zoom, Teams or Meet.
There are tremendous social and academic benefits to having a musical education. Studies of arts education in school settings have shown that the arts enhance cognitive skills by building critical thinking, problem solving and creative thinking skills. There are correlations between arts and higher scores in math and language arts. Learning an instrument in particular can improve memory and concentration. It will also boost self-confidence, self-expression, and self-discipline. Learning an instrument will make learning more enjoyable for students. Plus, interacting with a music teacher is very likely to be a net positive for anyone taking a virtual lesson who may not have exposure to teachers or to activities teachers.
There’s another plus. If your homeschooled child is planning on going on for additional education, the inclusion of music lessons can really benefit the evaluation of the child’s transcripts. And music is a language that requires no translation if he/she/they should move on to a university level.
Another component is the teacher who will be working with your child. Piero’s Music has a robust staff of music educators. Many on our staff are schoolteachers during the day and provide private music lessons as a second job. All of our instructors have at least several years of college under the belt, and some carry advanced degrees in instruction. None of our teachers will judge you or your child for being homeschooled or taking virtual lessons. We understand how personal a choice this can be for parents.
Piero’s Music can help you select an instrument. Or we may create an opportunity for your child to work with several instructors to see what instrument most appeals to them. Piano, guitar, bass, drums, violin, clarinet, or saxophone are all possibilities. Some of these items will be personality dependent.
There are instruments for any situation and setting. Are drum lessons possible in tight living spaces? Today, they sure are! A set of electronic drums can fold and unfold easily and take up far less room than a traditional drum kit. Guitars can sit in a stand or hang on a wall, our starter kits are inexpensive, high quality, and are highly portable. And an electric piano is also quite a space saver, as it is quickly broken down for flat storage. That’s right: Modern, electric drums, pianos and guitars can all be stored under a bed. How cool is that?!
