♫ Piano/Keyboard: We write both piano and keyboard because we work on electronic pianos or keyboards in the store, but you may go home and play on an upright or grand piano. We also have several teachers covering many levels of skill.
♫ Guitar, Bass, Ukulele: You can go with acoustic guitar or electric guitar or bass lessons. People often don’t take the tiny ukulele seriously, but it can be a seriously fun and enjoyable instrument to play.
♫ Drums: This is near and dear to our heart. Some people think a rock music drum kit, others think classical timpani, but no matter the style of music, the drums are always popular.
♫ Violin, Viola, Cello, Upright Bass: Each has a different tone, but these string instruments that are played with a bow are always popular. If your school-aged child is thinking about building their extracurricular activities for those college applications, learning these and joining the school orchestra is a great idea!
♫ Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet: We know we’re mixing our brass and woodwind instruments. So what?! We have teachers who can help your child or you, if you’re a returning player, to get into the swing of things with these handy air-powered options.
“Start at the very beginning,
That’s a very good place to start.” – The Sound of Music
The piano is probably the best instrument for learning music theory. This means learning to read music, understanding scales and chords, and developing the broadest general knowledge of music. It doesn’t mean that you should only limit yourself to piano, but the piano is an amazing instrument for foundational knowledge. Want to learn something neat right here? If you read the line on the treble clef on a piece of sheet music can be remembered with this little phrase (bottom to top): Every Good Boy Does Fine. That’s E-G-B-D-F. Once you remember this and associate the lines with a keyboard’s keys, you will always remember it.
Of course, piano is a very difficult instrument to master. Some people move to something more forgiving, like guitar. This isn’t to say guitar is “easy” – it’s not – but as you begin to learn things like the basic shapes of chords on guitars, you will see how they repeat, and how strumming patterns are a major component of playing. We have a nice trick to share with guitar, too. If you want to learn the notes of the strings from top down, remember this: Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie. That’s E-A-D-G-B-e. Pretty neat, huh?
