Although our history is filled with many owners, instructors and different lines of music gear, one thing has always been clear: everyone here loves music. In fact, you could say that music is what pumps through the veins of all of us at Piero’s Music.
People walk through our door for a variety of reasons. Some come because they or their children have always wanted to learn or improve on an instrument, and they’re coming for music lessons. Some come because they want a new guitar, bass, keyboard or drums. Others bring their instruments to us for repair or a tune up. And still others come for accessories, like amplifiers, cables, strings or a tambourine.
Our feelings about music run deep, and part of it is because it’s the career everyone in the store has chosen. Most of us work day jobs as music teachers in schools, but we also have professional music experience. For instance, our owner and general manager Mike Fumento spent much of his career as a touring drummer. He and his brother and partner, Tony Fumento, played together for many years in a rock band, where Tony on bass and Mike on drums formed the rhythm section.
Piero’s Music basically has two different sides to its business: sales and service of instruments; and music lessons. Both of these areas are geared to support our clientele, which means that we do a quality job at an affordable price.
The first thing anyone who walks into Piero’s Music will notice is our wall of stringed instruments. These include electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric basses, ukuleles, banjos and a few things that may look unusual, like a parlor guitar. Sometimes, we have these unique instruments because we find a good deal, and we know that some players are inclined to have more than one guitar.
As you walk into the store and scan, you will see a lot more music gear. We have a nice selection of amplifiers for instruments like electric guitars and basses, cables, microphones, tambourines, drums, cymbals, keyboards, violins, saxophones, trumpets. Behind the counter you can see our selection of electronic equipment, and you’ll see drumsticks, guitar picks, bass picks, capos, tuners, strings, effects pedals. The list just goes on and on.
Guitars are a popular instrument for local players, and this area has produced some guitarists, bassists and other musicians who’ve gone on to pop music fame. A few names who have band members from the area or who lived or grew up in Bayonne and Jersey City include rock act Vanilla Fudge, R&B legends Kool and the Gang, new wave act Blondie, bluesman Popa Chubby, and Woodstock guitarist Richie Havens. We are really proud to point to so many success stories that began or made their way through our area.

Instruments are not unlike cars or any sophisticated pieces of equipment. The moving parts on any instrument, the stress it endures, will leave it not sounding its best. Sometimes instruments are damaged and need to be repaired. The good thing is that Piero’s Music performs many minor repairs in-house, including cleaning, polishing and lubrication, plus we have a wonderful network of expert technicians who we send more complex repair or maintenance work out to.
Having an acoustic or electric guitar or bass setup done annually will help to keep your instrument sounding its best. This is a process that we would recommend includes installing new stings, adjusting action, intonation, aligning the neck, adjusting the bridge, inspecting tuners, cleaning electronics (if applicable), including adjusting the height of the pickups. Topping that off with a nice cleaning and polishing will give your instrument a “like new” appearance and feel. The same process can also be applied to other stringed instruments like violins, cellos, ukuleles and banjos.

This brings us to one of the hearts of our business: music lessons. We provide individual music lessons for players at all levels of learning.
One of the ideas that students have often conveyed to us is that their playing has plateaued. This is not uncommon. You may have played at one time or are just beginning, and you practice but don’t seem to get any better. There are reasons for this, but the diagnosis and correction will be an individual experience.
This is why it is so important to come in and have weekly one-on-one instruction. Our teachers, whether it’s piano, drums or guitar, will be able to assess your skill level, your technique and can then design a program to elevate your playing.
If you and/or your child are just starting out, it’s no problem. In fact, parent-child lessons can be really fun for a family. It’s a great bonding tool, and you will help your child to stay more focused on an instrument if you are learning alongside them. Of course, it will really boost their confidence when they begin outplaying you.
We have separate sections on lessons, the type of lessons we offer, and the profiles of our teachers. Please peruse our website to learn more about all we offer.
