Have you seen the movie A Complete Unknown? The Oscar-nominated film focuses on a pivotal time in the life of Grammy Award winner Bob Dylan. It’s a wonderful account of this time, and features star Timothee Chalamet’s outstanding portrayal of Dylan, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, and the always terrific Edward Norton as Pete Seeger.
We recently came upon an article about how while learning guitar to prepare for his role, Chalamet went into a New York music shop and bought a $200 guitar. He’s a wealthy actor, so he could have bought a guitar for ten times that number but instead went with a guitar that’s a frequent choice for students. We applaud that he did this and are sure it added even more authenticity to his experience.
The teachers at Piero’s Music found this very interesting because, although we have some really gorgeous instruments, it reminded us about the value of a fantastic entry-level piece of equipment.

One of the things we like better about our Jam Packs than the instrument that Timothee Chalamet chose is that the model of guitar he selected isn’t good if you don’t have a pretty large hand or a hand that can really stretch. The neck of the guitar is a little wide for our liking, and the fret board becomes too demanding for beginning players.
Why is this bad? It becomes frustrating. The last thing you want for someone who is just starting to play is for the joy of playing to become a frustrating chore. That will lead a beginner to abandon the instrument and the lessons before making really solid progress.
The Dean AXS Prodigy features a C shaped neck that we think is a superior fit for a beginner’s hand. The Ibanez is a little more of a budget line, but it also has a neck that is easy to wrap your hand around. And as your playing progresses, you can upgrade your guitar to a higher-end model, but rest assured that this beginner’s guitar will be with you for the rest of your playing days. We all get attached to our first axe.
